Ashtabula OH — FREE fully vetted dogs and cats — 256 animals in a shelter for 48 dogs — no air conditioning

The Ashtabula County Animal Protective League in NE Ohio was built to house 48 dogs.  Currently they have about 150 dogs and over 100 cats.  Dogs are 3 and 4 to a kennel, and some are being housed outside.   There is just nowhere to put them.  I know it’s bad for everyone right now, but the APL Board of Directors has finally been persuaded that as desperate as they are, they need to let me offer fully vetted animals to rescue for free to approved rescues until things get a little better. 

Because of the desperateness of the situation, highly adoptable animals will for now have to go to whoever can get them out the quickest.  I usually go by first-come, first-served…whoever asks first has the option of putting a hold on an animal.  But for now, we just need to get the animals out as quickly as possible.  There are always transport options available, so don’t hesitate to ask about *any* animal, even if you are far away.

All animals come fully vetted.  This includes spay/neuter, UTD on shots including rabies, heartworm tested, and current on flea and heartworm preventative .   For the duration of the free special, we would ask that *if* you are a rescue or shelter that has your own vet and can get the animals spayed/neutered at a low cost that you consider taking unaltered animals.  The shelter is still way behind on surgeries, so more than half of the animals at the shelter aren’t available for public adoption yet.  This puts a strain on the shelter, but does open up the possibility for rescues who can spay/neuter themselves to get first dibs on the most adoptable animals.  If an animal’s listing says “not yet available” in most cases this just means the animal has not been spayed/neutered yet, but can still go to rescue for free.

This is a shelter that aspires to be no-kill, and truly does have the best interests of the animals at heart.   But it is the only animal shelter in the largest county in Ohio, in a very poor, rural area.   They have to take in every animal the city and county dog wardens bring them…this can be hundreds of dogs in a month.   When numbers get up, as they are now, they have to euthanize if we can’t get the animals out. The Board of Directors has decreed that euthanasia for space should start at 80 dogs and 70 cats, so dozens of animals could be killed at any time.

The Importance of Craft

It’s more then just an outlet for creativity, which is how I often see it, and which thought process often leads me to judge what I make: Is it “creative enough”? Is it “truly unique”? Does it show “natural talent”? Is it beautiful? Is it Art? None of this matters. Well, no, of course it matters, but it is not the *only* thing that matters. It is in fact very far from being the most important aspect of craft.

Humans evolved using our hands to create. It is our use of tools that has allowed us to progress to this point. Thumbs and prefrontal cortex, that’s really all that allows us to be the kings and queens of this jungle (and yes I realize there are those who would disagree, and I’m sure I’m grossly oversimplifying, but it’s a model to base my thoughts on for now). I believe we have a deep, inate need to create things with our hands. I believe it is literally what we evolved to do. To create with tools the betterment of the planet.

Part of the neurosis of society, and definitely part of my own neurosis, is the remove we are at from creating the things we need to survive. Our lifestyle is one of spending spending spending to get what we require, and yet there is always more to desire. But what if we remove ourselves from that cycle, and look around us at what we already possess, and see if we don’t already have everything we need? Why not change our focus to anticipating our needs, and creating what will fill them, in advance of the desperate impulse buy. This is how our ancestors lived, and to me it feels natural.

I’ve been working on ways to live more sustainably, but so far it’s been more a lot of big ideas rather than hands-on work. Like a lot of people lately I’ve been guided by the mantra “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without” And yet I couldn’t resist the big sale at Old Navy a few weeks ago. I’m working on it. It’s like I tell people who aspire to be vegan but aren’t able to give up cheese or even meat yet, every meal you *don’t* eat these things helps. The good you’ve done by abstaining from animal products at breakfast and dinner isn’t negated by the chicken sandwich you had for lunch. It’s a process. I am in the process of learning to live sustainably.

Our first attempt at a garden this summer bombed, because I did not put in the research and effort to be sure it was done right. I thought the richness of the rabbitat soil would make up for all my failings and I was wrong. But I’ve learned from that, and now we are working on a garden of leafy greens for fall harvest. And next spring we will know better. A process. And for me, my goal is to buy no more mass produced items. (One exception might have to be shoes, unless I can find a vegan shoemaker who handmakes shoes that can stand up to a farming lifestyle. I used to thrift all my shoes but I’ve been turned off to that ever since the pair that made my feet smell…I realized my feet were not the only things living in those shoes!)

And most importantly, whenever I need something my first question will be “can I make it?” There is nothing more satisfying than making. Than knowing you have the skills and ability to create your own happiness and fulfillment. It goes so much deeper than the actual object made. We talk about the self-sufficient lifestyle, but I don’t know that we always really hear the words. Self-sufficient…I am sufficent…I am enough. I can make what I need. I can make my own happiness. And what could be more beautiful than that?

Ashtabula OH — 120+ dogs — No air conditioning — Poodle, puggle, lots of special needs

We’re now facing a dog crisis at the Ashtabula APL in NE Ohio. They are currently housing 120+ dogs (plus cats!) in a shelter that was only built to house 48 dogs. With no air conditioning. Euth for space is supposed to start at 80 dogs, so 40+ dogs are in danger if we don’t move some soon. We need rescue help desperately.

This is a shelter that aspires to be no-kill, and truly does have the best interests of the animals at heart. But it is the only animal shelter in the largest county in Ohio, in a very poor, rural area. They have to take in every animal the city and county dog wardens bring them…this can be hundreds of dogs in a month. When numbers get up, as they are now, they have to euthanize if we can’t get the animals out.

July was a horrible month for the APL dogs. For some reason, more and more dogs just kept pouring in….double digits many days. And with the cat crisis, dogs weren’t able to be spayed and neutered. So now there is a huge backlog of dogs waiting to be altered so that they can be adopted.

Because the current situation is so desperate, they are also allowing me to send unaltered dogs to approved rescues for only $25 for adult dogs, $50 for puppies.

The APL is *very* rescue friendly. We’re pleased to be able to send fully vetted dogs to rescue for only $75. That’s spayed/neutered, UTD on shots including rabies, heartworm tested, and current on flea and heartworm preventative. In addition, there is the following special pricing on special dogs:

  • Dogs over 5 years old: $50
  • Dogs that have been at the shelter more than 2 months: $25
  • Big black dogs over 6 months old: $25

Because the current situation is so desperate, they are also allowing me to send unaltered dogs to approved rescues for only $25 for adult dogs, $50 for puppies.

    After years of soul-crushing corporate employment I moved to the country to start an animal rescue with my husband. Now I spend my days cleaning up poop, trying to find homes for animals in need, and making things, which I sell to support my rescue efforts. When I'm not in the doldrums of a depression I realize that I am very lucky indeed :)
